Is Qnexa The Next Weightloss Pill?

An expert panel of FDA advisers has nearly unanimously backed approval for the newest weight loss drug called Qnexa.
The panel voted 20 – 2 in favor of the anti-obesity drug, but at what cost?
The FDA had previously rejected the drug due to safety concerns when it was introduced in 2010. What are the possible side effects of Qnexa? Studies show it raises heart rate and causes heart palpitations, something that has plagued diet pills over the years.
The FDA is not required to follow the advice of the panel, but most of the time it does. If this is the case, a final decision is expected to be handed down in April.
Although it is unclear if the side effects of Qnexa can lead to heart attacks, experts believe at this time there is an overwhelming need for an effective weight loss drug.
Besides dieting or surgery there are very few options. With the obesity rate nearly 35% for American adults, is it better to have no drug options available for a potentially life threatening condition — or to take a drug that could have life threatening side affects?
Do the benefits outweigh the risks? We’ll know in April.
